| Breaking News |  | Tuesday, May 13th, 2014: Beacons Lose Casares for Season
The doctors have spoken and Cristobal Casares of the Akron Beacons didn't like what he heard. The 26-year-old second baseman is almost certainly gone for the rest of the year and depending on his progress could miss some of next season as well. Casares sustained his season-ending injury during the Quincy Gems game yesterday at Ballpark of Saint Paul. He had to leave the game because he hurt himself while colliding with a player at a base. Today the Akron medical staff reported Casares had a fractured cheekbone and would be absent from the lineup for at least 7-8 months.
This season Casares is batting .316 with 50 hits, 4 home runs, 30 RBIs, .359 OBP and has scored 24 runs. |
 | Monday, May 12th, 2014: Week's Top Player: Flatbush's Blackmer
This week John Blackmer, second baseman for the Flatbush Pups, slashed, mashed and bashed his way to the Sub League 2 Player of the Week trophy.
Blackmer put up a .476 average as he pounded out 10 hits, 2 home runs, 5 RBIs and scored 4 runs.
In 2014 Blackmer has put up a .254 batting average with 34 hits, 5 home runs and 23 RBIs. |

Hernando Albacete is respected by most Quincy Gems fans for his no-frills style of play. The 19-year-old shortstop went about his business with vigor last week to grab the Sub League 1 Player of the Week honors.
He compiled a .577 average (15-26) with 1 home run, 4 RBIs and 8 runs scored.
This season-to-date Albacete has 3 home runs and a .318 batting average. |
